2014: The Year of Oils

I have always been quite fond of beauty oils, but they have never really formed a big part of my beauty regimen. Last year changed that. 2014 saw amazing skin and hair oil launches and I also had the opportunity to try products that have been around for a while. I have fallen in love with so many oils that it is quite difficult to choose a clear favourite in each category so I decided to give you a round up of products that I highly recommend you give a try.

Essential-Oils

FACE

In the past I have been weary of facial oils as I was always worried that they would cause more oiliness and congestion, but I quickly learnt that it is not the case. Facial oils work wonders for my skin especially during the winter months as my skin can become very dull and even flaky. Change of season is particularly harsh on my skin and oils have proved to be lifesavers. Winners include Lipidol Overnight Face Oil, L’Oreal’s Age Perfect Extraordinary Oil and Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse (and yes… this oil is as good as they say). An oil that deserves a very special mention is Naturals Beauty’s Sweet Orange Wrinkle Banisher. This oil takes top spot on days that my skin is very sensitive. It is amazing and I will be making sure that I have enough of this beaut in my stash when winter comes a knockin’. This is most definitely one of my best beauty buys of 2014.

I also tried a couple oil cleansers and two really stood out: Dermalogica’s PreCleanse and Lipidol’s Cleansing Face Oil. You will note in my review of the Lipidol Cleansing Face Oil that I liked it as a pre-cleanser, but I don’t use it just for removing make-up anymore. It has proven to be a perfect morning cleanser and it works beautifully as a second cleanse. It has been a godsend on sensitive skin days and this product will be repurchased again and again.

BODY

My skin is very dry and body oils work the best to combat scaly, dull skin. Favourites of 2014 include Lipidol’s After Shower Oil and the REN Moroccan Rose Otto Ultra-Moisture Body Oil. I have recently discovered Nivea’s Firming Body Oil and I adore it! It is light, absorbs very well and does not aggravate my eczema-prone skin. It is true love, people. Well worth a go. Yet another Lipidol product that deserves 5 stars is the Lipidol Sunscreen Oil. It feels like the After Shower Oil but with an added SPF… need I say more? One of my best beauty discoveries of all time is the TanOrganic Self Tanning Oil. I am allergic to the chemicals in self-tanning products, but this organic self-tanner gives my a gorgeous tan with no negative reaction. Read my full review HERE.

HAIR

I don’t think a day has gone by that I have not used a hair oil since discovering what a major difference it has made to the condition, look and feel of my dry, chemically treated hair. To treat my hair I love to use Africa Organics Hair Treatment Oil (I love their hair care products) or good old organic coconut oil. To treat and style, INOAR Extreme Premium Oil and Moroccanoil can’t be beat. My full Moroccanoil review is on it’s way. I now understand why the brand has such a cult following. Great budget-friendly options include Dark and Lovely Amla Legend Oil and OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco (available at Foschini).

Lipidol Reviews

A while ago I did a quick Brand Focus on Lipidol post and I promised the individual reviews. So here they are…

Cleansing Face Oil

I love using oils to pre-cleanse my skin especially if I have a lot of make-up to remove. You first apply the oil to your dry skin and give it a good massage. The oil, dirt and make-up binds with the cleansing oil. Then you add a bit of water and continue to massage. The oil emulsifies which allows you to easily rinse off the product and all the grime goes down the drain with it. I like using the cleansing oil in this way, but I love using it as a morning cleanse. It leaves my skin feeling clean, but not stripped. I like that you don’t feel any residue on your skin after rinsing. I don’t recommend using it to remove eye make-up, but I don’t like using any form of oil to do that. So that’s up to you. I think this is a great facial cleansing oil and I don’t think you’ll find anything to match it in this price range.

Overnight Face Oil*

Face oils are great at night, especially during the drier months. I have been using this oil for a couple of weeks on nights that I feel my skin needs a little extra care. My skin feels soothed as soon as I apply it and my skin looks and feels great the next morning. I can see myself using this every night during winter. Take note that a little goes a loooong way. I tend to use too much and then I feel a little suffocated until it’s fully absorbed. A couple of drops are more than enough. Again I don’t think there is a facial oil that can match the quality of Lipidol’s in this price range. Highly recommended.

Cleansing Body Oil*

Lipidol Cleansing Body Oil Review Pretty Please Charlie

I think this is the only product in the range that I am not completely crazy about. It does leave my skin feeling clean, soft and nourished, and I think it will work like a charm for anybody who doesn’t like applying body creams. I have two issues with it though. People have commented that they like the lime scent, but I’m not too fond of it. It doesn’t linger, so it’s no biggy. I would also have liked it to lather a bit more. It doesn’t lather well on a sponge and I feel like I have to use way too much product. A bit of a waste. It spreads a lot better if I just use my hands.

After Shower Oil*

Lipidol After Shower Oil Review Pretty Please Charlie

Love, love, love. This product has a permanent spot on my shopping list. It’s very nourishing, it absorbs well and it doesn’t seem to aggravate my sensitive, eczema-prone skin. Skin is left soft, moisturised and cared for. This is fantastic body oil and I highly recommend it. I also use it on my little girl’s skin. Well done Lipidol.

Sunscreen Oil

Lipidol Sunscreen Oil Review Pretty Please Charlie

This is a winner. It pretty much feels like the After Shower Oil, but with an added SPF20. This is not your average suntan oil. You know… the ones that seem to just sit on your skin and leaves that shiny layer on top of the water in the pool. This oil does not do that. I need to stock up on this one.

Overall I am VERY impressed with Lipidol. All the products go for R80 and you will find it on a dedicated Lipidol stand at Clicks. Family members can expect quite a few of these in their Christmas stockings. The guys will probably all get an After Shave Oil and I am very curious to know what they will think of that one. There is so much ‘right’ with Lipidol… excellent quality, great price, efficacy, simple packaging. I personally love the packaging; I am just worried that it will not be very noticeable to the average consumer. And this is a brand that deserves to be noticed.
