Learning through play with Barney and WIN! (CLOSED)

And the winner is… Claire! “Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.” -Joseph Chilton Pearce Play is extremely important during early childhood development. Through play children learn how to interact and engage with the world around them, as well as developing imagination, physical, cognitive and emotional strength, creativity and building gross and fine motor skills. Toys and games play a very important role in early childhood development as it stimulates imagination, creativity and aids in building fine motor skills. The importance of toys in Early Childhood Development According to parenting and early childhood specialist, Lynda Smith, toys and games assist hugely with igniting the senses and imagination, and basic developmental concepts such as identifying shapes, colours and numbers. Moreover, they encourage motor development (from rolling and crawling, to jumping and running) and cognitive function. With these skills, children – from babies through to preschoolers – can better understand their environment and start to make full use of their minds and bodies. “The right books, music, puzzles and soft toys all help children better understand the world around them and develop fine motor skills. When children are empowered and encouraged to learn by those closest to them from early on in life, they are more likely to cope better at school,” says Smith. Smith adds that parents need to recognise the ways children learn through their senses. She mentions how soft toys, for instance, help to develop imaginary play. Kids’ TV programmes, like Barney and Friends, allow children to identify with characters and encourage imagination. These programmes motivate children to play outside, share with others and,...

Win with Kellogg’s and make breakfast the most important meal of the day (CLOSED)

Congrats Kerry and Lelani! I have to eat breakfast. Without it I can be beyond cranky. My mom forced me to eat my cereal in the morning when I was at school and I am eternally grateful. I can remember a friend of mine in Grade 1 could not keep his eyes open in class and teachers thought he had learning difficulties… turned out it was because he refused to eat breakfast! Once his mom made sure he went to school with a full tummy, he had no problems keeping up with the rest of the class. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Especially for school-going children. Did you know that almost one in five children go to school without breakfast? Studies indicate that children who attend school hungry have problems with their health and performance in school. Without having breakfast it is impossible for children to feed their minds and reach their full potential in school. Below, Kellogg’s South Africa shares more about why kids should not skip breakfast and how they are filling tummies with their amazing Breakfast for Better Days™ initiative. Feeding young minds: make breakfast the most important meal of the day It is said to be the most important meal of the day, but what makes breakfast so special? During the daily chaos of life, it is easy to sometimes miss out on your morning meal. However, registered SA dietician Kelly Francis believes that spending breakfast time together as a family has a noticeable, positive effect on the children’s learning and wellbeing. “It is important that families sit down at...
