“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.” -Joseph Chilton Pearce

Play is extremely important during early childhood development. Through play children learn how to interact and engage with the world around them, as well as developing imagination, physical, cognitive and emotional strength, creativity and building gross and fine motor skills.

Toys and games play a very important role in early childhood development as it stimulates imagination, creativity and aids in building fine motor skills.

The importance of toys in Early Childhood Development

According to parenting and early childhood specialist, Lynda Smith, toys and games assist hugely with igniting the senses and imagination, and basic developmental concepts such as identifying shapes, colours and numbers.

Moreover, they encourage motor development (from rolling and crawling, to jumping and running) and cognitive function. With these skills, children – from babies through to preschoolers – can better understand their environment and start to make full use of their minds and bodies.

“The right books, music, puzzles and soft toys all help children better understand the world around them and develop fine motor skills. When children are empowered and encouraged to learn by those closest to them from early on in life, they are more likely to cope better at school,” says Smith.

Smith adds that parents need to recognise the ways children learn through their senses. She mentions how soft toys, for instance, help to develop imaginary play. Kids’ TV programmes, like Barney and Friends, allow children to identify with characters and encourage imagination. These programmes motivate children to play outside, share with others and, encourage daily routine.

Barney drives the importance of early childhood development through play and have partnered with Liberty to offer 10 Education Builders valued at R10 000 each!

Celebrate Finding Dory and Just Keep Winning (CLOSED)

And the winner is… Danielle Fuller!

Dory is hitting our big screens on 16 June 2016!! And we can’t wait. We have our 3D glasses ready!

Disney Pixar Finding Dory

Join Dory, Marlin and Nemo on an epic adventure that is sure to be an unforgettable experience for young and not-so-young.

Disney•Pixar’s Finding Dory welcomes back to the big screen everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres), who’s living happily in the reef with Nemo (voice of Hayden Rolence) and Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks). When Dory suddenly remembers that she has a family out there who may be looking for her, the trio takes off on a life-changing adventure across the ocean to California’s prestigious Marine Life Institute, a rehabilitation center and aquarium. In an effort to find her mom (voice of Diane Keaton) and dad (voice of Eugene Levy), Dory enlists the help of three of the MLI’s most intriguing residents: Hank (voice of Ed O’Neill), a cantankerous octopus who frequently gives employees the slip; Bailey (voice of Ty Burrell), a beluga whale who is convinced his echolocation skills are on the fritz; and Destiny (voice of Kaitlin Olson), a nearsighted whale shark. Deftly navigating the complex innerworkings of the MLI, Dory and her friends discover the magic within their flaws, friendships and family.

Dory is still one of my favourite characters and I can’t help but grin when I have ‘Just keep swimming’ stuck on repeat in my mind.
