I’ve heard about Himalayan Salt Lamps over the years, but I didn’t get it. Why were people so keen on these lamps? Little did I know that I would become completely obsessed with these salty beauties. And I mean OBSESSED!

I have to blame my sister for this obsession as she started it all. She was going on and on about Himalayan Salt Lamps for so long that I decided that I had to buy her one for Christmas. Now she has two, my mom has one and I have three! And we are not done yet.

I saw this grey lamp on Simply Salt’s Facebook page a couple of weeks ago and I just had to have it. Isn’t it magnificent?! How does a Himalayan salt lamp work

Simply Salt explains why a Himalayan Salt Lamp is a must for your home:

Salt is Hygroscopic, which means that it attracts water molecules from the surrounding environment. Water molecules float around in every room in your home. However, water molecules aren’t the only invisible substance hiding all around you. Alongside these water molecules are dust, pollen, mold, and other allergens. Even bacteria and viruses can hitch a ride on these water molecules.

Himalayan Salt Lamps work by attracting the water molecules in your room. In so doing, it also pulls in all the pollutants and contaminants attached to these molecules. The Lamp helps to detoxify your room by capturing and holding these particles so they aren’t left floating around for you to breathe in. Then, as the bulb heats the lamp, the water vapor is released back into the air, but the salt lamp retains the contaminants.

Along with the hygroscopic benefits, Himalayan salt lamps release negative ions into the surrounding environment. For those curious, negative ions are simply oxygen atoms with an extra electron.

These negative ions occur in nature via the effects of water, air, and sunlight. Have you ever gone for a hike through the mountains or near a waterfall only to feel rejuvenated? Negative ions are partly to thank for that wonderful feeling. Nature has the ability to heal, and Himalayan salt lamps will give you the same feeling you get from being outside.

How awesome is that?! Not only do these lamps offer the benefits as described above, they also look beautiful and they make amazing essential oil diffusers. I put a drop or two of essential oil directly on to my lamps and the warmth gently diffuses the oil into the room.
