Ever wonder about the origin of the baby rattle? Here’s an interesting read…

A rattle is a rattle is a rattle? – Snookums

A rattle is a rattle is a rattle right? Not according to history… The origins of the rattle were lost in time but it can definitely be regarded as the oldest toy in the world. A museum called the Bibliotheca Wittockiana has on display a collection of over 500 rattles collected by Idès Cammaert, a passionate collector and owner of the largest private collection of its kind.

Some say that the rattle was invented by Archytas of Tarentum (born around 440 BC). But is wasn’t merely something for a child to play with. The material that the rattle was made of often determined its role. Dried fruit, pomegranates, terracotta, gold, silver, mother of pearl, coral and crystal were all used in earlier years to produce rattles. The material used was sometimes an indication of the child’s family’s wealth and they were also used as lucky charms to protect babies against sorcery or disease.

Other sources will tell you that figures shaped like birds or dogs were made with small balls inside that would rattle. But as clay is not safe for babies, Paul Revere started making silver rattles that can be chewed. Tiffany’s, the famous New York company, soon jumped on the band wagon and made sterling silver rattles as baby gifts.

Fortunately rattles today is a much less complicated matter than in earlier years. But even so, the reasons for using them and the advantages for baby are probably still the same. Rattles are a source of stimulation for babies – they like the sounds and they try to follow the path of the rattle with their eyes. So while entertaining baby the rattle is also honing baby’s senses.  It also helps them to learn to explore and can of course also double up as teethers.

To celebrate the launch of these cute new rattles, Snookums has been kind enough to offer an amazing hamper to give away to one lucky Pretty Please Charlie reader.

Palmer’s Raw Shea Body Lotion Review

It’s not often that a budget body lotion is worthy of it’s own blog post. Does the Palmer’s Raw Shea Body Lotion deserve it? One thousand times YES!

Palmer's Raw Shea Body Lotion Pretty Please Charlie

Palmer’s Raw Shea Body Lotion

Palmer’s combined African Marula Oil, Vitamin E and Oatmeal Extract with Raw Shea Butter and created a lotion that makes my heart skip a beat. How can you get that excited about a body lotion, you may ask?

I have very dry, super sensitive skin that gets lathered in lotion or cream after every shower. From top to toe. I go through a lot of product very quickly. My ultimate body lotion should leave my skin soft, smooth, nourished and it should not break the bank. I also need it to keep my skin looking and feeling moisturised for the whole day and work with my sensitive (often temperamental) skin.

Palmer’s, your body lotion ticks all the boxes. I seriously love it.

What also impressed me is the fact that even though the lotion is not very thick, it still feels rich and nourishing. It absorbs quickly and will not make your skin feel suffocated which makes it great for summer.

The key ingredients of this beauty are:

  • African Raw Shea Butter: deeply moisturizes and softens skin
  • Marula Oil: improves texture and radiance
  • Oatmeal Extract: calms and soothes irritation
  • Vitamin E: rejuvenates and combats free radical damage
  • Grapeseed Oil: keeps skin looking youthful
  • Sunflower Seed Oil: balances tone and texure
  • Soybean Oil: helps prevent skin dehydration

The formula is also paraben-, phthalates-, sulphate-, mineral oil-, gluten- and dye free.

I was worried about the scent…

I know that Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula is a cult favourite, but I do not like it at all. The formulations of all the products in the range are gorgeous, yes, but the sweet scent has always put me off. I was worried that I would have the same experience with the Shea Formula, but this lotion smells amazing. Think subtle and clean. It is gorgeous. Really and truly.

I am so happy with Palmer’s Raw Shea Body Lotion and it will be bought over and over again. And I don’t have to feel guilty as 400ml goes for only R60. Make sure to grab one next time you’re in Clicks or Dis-Chem. You won’t be sorry.
