My aunt gave me this play dough recipe (that she found on livingwellmom.com) a couple of years ago and it is the best thing ever!
How to make Play Dough
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup of flour
- 1 cup of water
- 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
- ⅓ cup of salt
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil ( I prefer to use a little more)
- food colouring
Instructions
- Mix all of the ingredients, except the colouring, in a pot.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat whilst stirring. Once it begins to thicken, you can add the food colouring*.
- Continue stirring until the mixture is much thicker and begins to gather around the spoon. Don’t worry about the lumps**!
- Remove from heat and put the dough on wax paper or a plate to cool.
* I prefer to add the colouring after the ‘cooking process’. I usually double the recipe and after the dough has cooled a bit, I divide it in 4 and then add a different colour to each. This is obviously a little more messy, but a lot more fun! Cara helps me to colour the dough and it gives her little fingers a good workout.
** Don’t stress when you see those lumps! I made a batch yesterday and once again thought that I messed up, but the lumps start to disappear as you ‘cook’ and any remaining lumps will be kneaded out whilst you colour the dough.
Make sure to store your dough in an air tight container or ziplock bags.
There you have it. Quick, easy, simple and non-toxic. And much cheaper than store bought dough. The dough also seems to last a lot longer and it does not dry out too quickly. If it does get a bit dry, you can just add a drop of oil or water, give it a good knead, and the dough is good to go.
